Voices of the Wilderness Artist Residency
Deadline: March 15 (applications must be postmarked on or before April 20, 2012)
Duration of Residency: June – September
Residency will provide food, transportation to and from the field, and most camping and kayaking gear.
Eligibility Requirements:
Ability to camp in a remote location and travel by skiff, airplane and sea kayak, and willingness to assist with light ranger duties. (Extensive backcountry/kayaking experience is not necessary for this residency, just capability)
General Information:
This unique artist residency pairs each artist with a wilderness ranger for one field trip. Traveling by sea kayak and camping alongside fiords, artists participate in light ranger duties while experiencing the wild heritage of the Chugach or Tongass. Each participant will donate one piece of artwork and provide a public presentation. You will be both a resident and volunteer learning all of the things the rangers need you to know. There are several different National Parks that you can choose from on the website.
Proposal Requirements:
Qualifying artists will include visual artists (e.g. painters, photographers, and sculptors), writers, musicians, and storytellers.
Additional Information:
This residency is for artists working in all different mediums. They seem to enjoy diversity in their applicants and tend to choose a wide range of art forms. Preferably something easy to take when traveling (ie. It would be hard to be a sculptor and bring 50 lbs of clay while kayaking through a national forest).
